No. No it is not a surprise. At least, it’s not if you know me.

Ever since I could remember, I’ve always loved spending money. Not necessarily on expensive things, but just in general. My parents kind of spoiled my sister and I in the sense that if we wanted something, we could get it. We were always taught that it’s pretty much whatever and we should go for it – even if it came to eating out or something…I’m always down to splurge a bit and get what I truly want.

Is that the smartest way to spend money? No, of course not.

And what do I end up with? A lot of STUFF.

It’s honestly become completely unnecessary, and yet…I still won’t stop shopping. Luckily, I’m working with The Financial Gym over the next few months to review my spending habits, help me pay off some debt, and learn how to be a smarter spender overall.

Since social media has become a platform to promote consumerism, I’m genuinely curious about YOU. And what kind of spender you are. I think it’s an important thing to talk about even though money is kind of taboo. I asked people to share what kind of shopper they were in this Instagram post. Most of you said you wait for deals, even if you’re favorite blogger posts something. A lot of you also said you have your “ride or die” stores. AND then there were some of you who also mentioned that you utilize services like Rent The Runway.

I noticed during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that many people were suggesting that their readers and followers open a credit card. Personally, I don’t think that’s really the best advice. Putting aside the commission factor, do you really want to push your audience to open a credit card JUST to shop a sale? It just felt a bit, I don’t know, wrong.

But anyway, that’s when I got the idea to write this post.

I’m all about being honest on my platforms, so I’ll let you in on a little bit of info: I don’t make a ton of money in commission. (But I never complain because 1. I don’t rely on that as income, 2. I don’t want to be the blogger that pushes product only and constantly, and 3. Extra money is extra money, and it’s more than I had before so ZERO complaints there.)

So I’m thinking a few things play a role.

  • You guys aren’t big shoppers. Or you aren’t necessarily buying right when I post an item.
  • I don’t post what you’re looking for (could be style, could be price range, etc.).
  • Maybe you’re just not a spender, but come to me for other reasons (i.e. my longer form posts, NYC life, etc.)

Spending your money is SO personal. It’s almost a weird conversation to have, but an important one among peers.

It’s interesting to see how social media plays such a role in consumer habits. Personally, I’m like, “If I see it, I want it.” So I buy it. I don’t analyze my purchases whatsoever. If I want it, I get it…and most things just end up in the back of my closet. And a lot of wasted money. A lot.

So that’s kind of where I’m at right now. And that’s why you should come back to the blog tomorrow to see what I’m embarking on for the next month;)

Does social media affect your mindset when it comes to spending?
