The pressure of living in a society where there are way too many factors that affect our well-being. In the social media age, it’s very easy to get caught up in a lot of nonsense that can be harmful to not only your mental health, but your physical health too. Now, more than ever, learning how to take care of yourself is extremely important. And it might be easier than you think.

Put the phone down

Again, social media can be a blessing and a curse. A digital detox is unbelievably important to take care of yourself, in today’s world. Even if you’re not a blogger, YouTuber or Instagram star, you’re more than likely on your phone a decent portion of the day. Putting down your phone for a couple of hours won’t hurt you. Want to hear something mind-blowing? The world doesn’t end if you’re not on your phone 24/7. This is probably the hardest lesson for me when it comes to learning how to take care of myself. I almost feel like I have anxiety (a tad dramatic) when I haven’t been on my phone or haven’t posted anything on my social media. Lately, I realized that I’m still going to get likes on Instagram, reply backs on Twitter, or shares on Facebook even if I don’t post for a few days.

“Me” time is a good thing

I’d like to think that I’m a social butterfly. I love going out and doing things with my friends. Being out and about is so fun for me. But “me” time is becoming more and more important. I love going to get my hair blown out or get my nails done by myself. I also love going shopping alone. And I definitely love laying in bed with a book, a good movie, or my favorite trashy TV show. It’s never a bad thing to give your body and mind some alone time and just hang out with yourself. You might even surprise yourself and realize you’re a pretty cool person 😉

Be thankful

There’s no sense in going through life being miserable and bitter. When you wake up every single day, you should be thankful. Everyone has something to be thankful for. Even if you’re at a low point in your life, there is always something that you could be thankful for. I know I have a million reasons to be thankful: my job, family, friends, Matt, health, success. I don’t take any of these people or things for granted. Without these people or things, I simply wouldn’t be me. So that in itself if 100% reason to be unbelievably thankful. And just look at it this way: It’s not what you’re thankful for, it’s just the act of being thankful to begin with that matters.

All about the company

Yeah, I know I just said “me” time is important, but surrounding yourself with good people is also insanely important. Don’t you think? As I get older, I’ve learned how to separate myself from toxic people and relationships. Instead of putting all of my effort into relationships with people who aren’t good for me, I focus on those who I truly care about…and care about me in return. Being around people who are truly supposed to be in your life does wonders for your mental health. Oh, and a good belly laugh every once in a while does the body good;)

Do the things that make you feel good

You’re 100% in control of your own life. You deserve to do things that make you happy. If you want to start a blog, go for it. If you’re unhappy in your career, do something about it. Is there a bag you’ve been eyeing for months? Save up and treat yo’self. Love going to the gym? More power to ya. At the end of the day, your happiness is in your own hands. You shouldn’t let others define your happiness. EVER. Bryn actually wrote an amazing post last week about making yourself a priority – check it out here!

It’s so important to take care of yourself. I don’t know if I can stress that enough. Whether you’re taking big or baby steps to improve your mental/physical health, it’s important that we open the conversation up. We all should be willing to talk about how to take care of yourself, especially if you could help someone along the way! What are some of your favorite ways to take care of yourself?
