Elle’s Edit: What To Do When You Are Feeling Burnt Out

If you are anything like me, you have a heck of a lot on your plate at all times. And it is exhausting.

Dana knows this really well because she yells at me constantly for this but I feel like I have to say “yes” to absolutely everything. I have always been like this because I don’t want to disappoint anyone and have FOMO. Gotta live life to the fullest,  right? Well, sometimes it can be too much and you can hit a breaking point. If I’m being honest with y’all, I’m at my breaking point. Let me back it up for you, I work in a pretty demanding and fast pace corporate job (which I love), I do Big Brothers Big Sisters, I recently got asked to be on the alumni board of my boarding school, I run the regional alumni network for my boarding school, AND I do this little thing called Elle’s Edit. Don’t get me wrong, I love everything I do especially helping out Dana with her blog and writing for her weekly. I’ve actually been pretty disappointed with myself because recently I don’t feel like I’ve handled all of this very well and have prioritized my job (which is important) over everything. I’m so thankful for Dana for allowing me to help her with her blog and the strategic/business side of it and to give me the creative outlet I so desperately needed but it can be daunting on top of everything else! I know I’m not alone here, all you bloggers and influencers kick some serious ass and I don’t know how you do the blogging on top of your job. Y’all inspire me every day! Just in case you need some extra inspiration or tips, here are a couple of things that help me when I am feeling burnt out.

Take a break

This is so hard for me because asking for help or saying no to a project isn’t something that I am always comfortable with doing. It is important to utilize all your vacation days at work because everyone needs a break and time to recharge. You will be shocked how motivated you will be when you come back after a couple days off.

Go to the spa

This past weekend I decided to treat myself to a facial and boy was it needed. It was so relaxing and I felt like I had the first moment to myself in a long long time. It is so important to take care of yourself and if you are anything like me, when you are so busy you put yourself last. It isn’t healthy or sustainable at all but it is something that I am working on. For me, going to the gym or taking a soul cycle class is always what I need. It helps me distress and forget about all my worries outside of the studio while I am working out. It probably is because I’m physically in pain and just think about it but you know what I mean!

Read

Update here! I went to the library and rented a book for my trip. I read it when I was down in Naples and loved getting back in the routine of reading before bed. Since I stare at my computer all day at work, it is so important to look at something that isn’t a screen before hitting the hay. I love reading Emily and Grace’s book recommendations and have picked up such great ones recently thanks to them.

Treat yourself

You deserve it! You’ve worked your bootay off for a long time and deserve a special treat. You can also use it as a motivational tool to get you through a tough project or simply just a reward for landing a dream collaboration, job, or killing it at your presentation.

Count your blessings

Keeping the best for last. I sometimes have to take a step back and realize how blessed I am to be so stressed. I just laughed writing that because in college everyone kept saying that as a joke but it is so true! We have it so good and I’m very grateful that I have a job that keeps me so busy (and needed!) and I have other things outside of work that I am so passionate about. What I challenge you is pause and write down five things that you are thankful for and realize that not everyone has the great opportunities that you have.

What do you do when you are on the verge of a breaking point?

  • Every single damn day I get to walk through the streets of New York City. Whether it’s Times Square, Flatiron, the West Village, or FiDi, this place is my home❤️ And 17 years ago today, one of the worst tragedies changed my life, and the lives of so many of us, forever. The day before 9/11, so many people went to bed not knowing what was going to happen on that beautiful Tuesday morning...but I was one of the luckiest ones. The days following 9/11 will forever haunt me — the photos of missing people posted at every grocery store or telephone pole alone are embedded in my mind just like it was yesterday. But the resilience of New Yorkers during that time will always be with me: We came together, we cried together, we healed together❤️ We stood up to the true testament of humanity, and us New Yorkers overcame. To those who lost someone on that day: We will NEVER FORGET them. We will CONTINUE to honor them🇺🇸 .
