Elle’s Edit: How To Reverse The New Year Funk

New Year funk? What is that? Let me tell you, I am sure you all are feeling it too.

I have always loved the New Year. The feeling of having a fresh start is something that is so exciting. You can change your routine, set some goals and expectations, or heck become a different person! Going into the New Year with these high expectations of yourself after the past couple of weeks of not really being in your every day routine can throw you for a loop. I arrived back to work last Thursday (right after my 6am flight) and woof it was tough. I haven’t been in the office since Dec 18th and only worked two days in between. I had so much positivity of the “New Year, New Me” mentality in my head that it ultimately overwhelmed me when I sat at my desk. My mind was going 100000 miles per minute and I honestly didn’t know where to start.

I am sure you can all relate to this. How do you find the balance of accomplishing all your 2019 goals while keeping sane and actually getting sh*t done? Well, I have come up with a list of ideas to help and I would love to hear what you do.

Get back into that routine. It is as easy as that. Sure, it is tough to get back to it after the past couple weeks (especially the time between Christmas and New Years) of being a complete couch potato slug but if you don’t snap out of it now, you never will. Think to yourself, what did you do before the holidays? Did you workout before work? Did you wake up at a certain time? Try to start doing that again and your body will naturally get back into it. It is going to be a rough couple of days but you will be thankful you did it. Heck since it is a New Year, consider switching it up! I’m a creature of habit so I love to switch up a routine. I would suggest you spend a couple of weeks first doing your old routine to get your body and mind back to where it was before. Can’t do a complete 180 that fast!

Write short-term goals and for yourself. Write them out! You should be writing goals for each month and what you plan to accomplish. This will help you stay on track to actually achieving your New Year’s resolutions. For me, I am training for the NYC Half in March so in my planner I wrote out all my workouts and mileage for each week. This will hold me accountable and help me get to the race.

Have reasonable to-do lists. We love to-do lists. LOVE. However, at the beginning of the year I feel like our lists are so long! Again, we are still on the high of the New Year and have so much to accomplish however you want to make them attainable. Start thinking about the tasks you need to revisit before the holidays. I’m sure that the days leading up to Christmas you weren’t the most productive in the office (it is normal) so revisit those to make sure everything was completed and with your best work.

Plan something to look forward to. Remind yourself that is is January. January is a cold and dark month. The first two weeks in my opinion is sort of fun with getting back into the groove but the weeks after? Dark, cold, no holidays to look forward to, and spring feels like centuries away. What I like to do is find something to look forward to. To me, that is a trip! Is there somewhere that you want to go in 2019? Start looking into it and book something! It will inspire you even more and get you excited for the months ahead.

Don’t be so hard on yourself! The New Year vibe is a lot of pressure for some people. Everyone thinks you have to become a new person but that is not the slightest bit true. It is a way to improve your life but love the person that you are. You accomplished so much in 2018 so just keep that going in 2019. Find ways to challenge yourself this year and go after it! You got this.

What are your tips for getting back into it?

  • Last night in my usual 6:30 @soulcycle class, @mantaszvinas said something that just stuck. He said, “Say your resolutions out loud.” And in that moment I realized something: I never said my resolution out loud to anyone. How am I supposed to be held accountable?
So in 2019, everything I do is going to have a purpose. Every blog post I publish, every Instagram post I curate, every email I send, every argument I make, every thing I put in my body. WHATEVER. It’s all going to have a PURPOSE. Resolutions could be heavy weight that is constantly on your mind — but that’s not what I want this year to be. 2019 is going to be another year of growth, happiness, success, and yes, probably even failure. But damn, I’m ready for it🙌🏼
Your turn. Say your resolutions out loud. Let’s hold each other accountable👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
